About the Course:
What people are saying about
StudyEdge
Q. My son is 13, and has already had
his first exam. They sit
reclassification exams to ensure they are in the correct
stream. Is it too soon to send
him to a course?
A. Thirteen is a great age to take the StudyEdge course
and is certainly not too early to develop as an independent learner.
Students are already being assessed and classified at this age.
StudyEdge is about discovering effective study skills and
attitudes and there is nothing that is too hard in this course for a 13
year old.
Q. I was surprised with the lack of study skills and exam skills
that were taught by the school.
A: Teachers have a lot of syllabus material to work through. They cannot
devote a day to helping your child discover how to perform better than
the others in their class.
However, this is exactly what we set out to achieve for your child at
StudyEdge.
Q:
My son is nervous in attending this course on his own. Are
parents able to attend with them?
A:
You would be very welcome to stay in the room for a while to
reassure your child. We find that even the most nervous
students are fine after the introductory phase that lasts about
half an hour. Our students soon realise that they are in a completely positive
environment free of criticism and negativity. They go through a series of exercises and tests but it is important
for your child to understand that there are no wrong answers –
the purpose is to allow them to construct their own thoughts and
better understand their individual learning preferences,
intelligence type and personality.
Q: Do you provide study books for each subject?
A: This is a course that
focuses entirely on generic study skills.
It does not provide material specific to subjects but rather focuses on
teaching a set of study skills that provide secondary school students
with an advantage in confidently approaching and dealing with the
learning challenges they face. While schools and subject tutors must
focus primarily on intensely teaching the material, StudyEdge
takes
a step back, takes a broader view, and teaches the skills we need to be
successful lifelong learners.
Q: My daughter gets nervous - as her teacher
and tutor for maths says she knows how to do the working out but seems
to do incorrect answers due to being so nervous!? Does your course cover
how to cope in this situation?
A: An important objective is to build confidence and overcome mental
barriers to success. Anxiety is a common phenomenon, particularly
amongst girls, and can be expressed in different ways. Having a set of
study disciplines (goals and plans) and a step by step approach to
follow in coming to grips with difficult material will enable your
daughter to feel more confident and in control. The course also covers
some simple techniques for dealing with the stress of exams, tests and
classroom assessment that she may find helpful.
Also during the course, students will discover their own personal
learning style (we test this using the licensed VARK methodology) and learn the
particular combination of techniques that will work best for them.
Q: My son says he is bored with school and
not interested in doing homework. Can this course help him?
A: If we do not think we will do well at something, we may attempt to
avoid it altogether. Thus feigning boredom and avoidance can often be
caused by a lack of confidence and fear of failure. The StudyEdge
course can help to restore self confidence by enabling students to
plan towards their personal academic and career goals and discover
step-by-step approaches to independent study that will match their
learning preferences.
