StudyEdge Secondary Study Skills Course

Is your child having a successful year at school?

Does your secondary school age child (13-18) have the independent study skills to stay on top of homework, assignments, projects, revision and preparing for assessments, tests and exams?

Is your child mastering the material in all subjects, managing independent study time well and working enthusiastically, consistently and confidently to achieve personal academic and career goals?

Has your child been taught the study techniques used by highly successful students?  For example reading using SQ3R, applying a step-by-step process for written work, staged index card revision, note taking, memorising with acronyms and acrostics, exam techniques and simple but powerful techniques for managing personal time and energy.

StudyEdge Secondary is an e-learning course that begins with a dynamic and inspiring half-day seminar, held in a university or corporate training setting. The StudyEdge course introduces secondary school students (13-18 years) to the study techniques used by top performing students.  It teaches independent study skills and inspires positive attitudes that can transform academic performance.

The introductory seminar is presented by Dr Bruce Johnstone, a UK-based university academic who created the StudyEdge course. He introduces students to the StudyEdge Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) containing a series of animated audio visual presentations and a wealth of supporting material, presented like a university e-learning course.  The StudyEdge VLE is a comprehensive e-learning resource designed to support students of different levels of ability in the development of excellent study techniques.

The course aims to empower students to:

  • Experience learning as rewarding and enjoyable.

  • Use their limited study time more efficiently.

  • Overcome procrastination, fear and negativity.

  • Maintain and manage their energy and concentration.

  • Understand and exploit their personal learning preferences.

  • Improve reading skills and boost comprehension.

  • Deal with material they do not at first understand.

  • Follow simple steps to produce superior written work.

  • Use simple techniques to memorise material.

  • Prepare confidently for examinations and tests.

  • Overcome common obstacles to learning.

StudyEdge Secondary is designed to meet the needs of secondary school students in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. It is entirely focussed on study skills and techniques and can benefit all secondary students, regardless of their individual subject choices and personal academic and career goals.

StudyEdge Secondary helps students to overcome common obstacles to study success and unlock their potential to grasp new concepts and absorb new information. It prepares them for university or other tertiary study.  But people with great study skills are not only better students; they are effective lifelong learners, able to update their qualifications with relative ease.

Lifelong learners have the ability to stay relevant and in-demand in fast-changing professions, or if they wish, to retrain and switch careers.  StudyEdge Secondary is a great investment in any young person's future.

The course participation fee includes:

  • 12 months access to the StudyEdge Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) containing a series of animated audio visual presentations and a wealth of supporting material is presented in the style of a university e-learning course.
  • Access to online tests for VARK learning preferences, Gartner intelligence type and personality type.
  • 12 months of free study skills personal e-mail support from Dr Bruce Johnstone.
